Biodiversity Essay                                         http://leylanybiology.blogspot.com/

Biodiversity has a very important role in this life; in fact its all the beauty we can see on the outside, what gives color and importance to the planet Earth.
As a more formal definition, biodiversity it’s all the variety of species and ecosystems in planet earth. The quality of biodiversity measures how healthy the biosphere is. Now a days there are millions of different species in earth that contribute for a common good, but also we are destroying some species, not reconsidering in the effect this will do in the future, that’s why we are talking about the importance of it.

First of all we have to mention that biodiversity has direct economic, aesthetic and scientific values. Since we all live in the same planet, and we all are contributing species (talking of humans, plant, animals, ecosystems) we need each other to survive.
Biodiversity brings a huge number of goods to the society, meaning medicines, crops, nutrition, clothes, that’s why it affects economically, because the extract of these assets, can be sold. The indirect economic value also has to be mentioned, humans find difficult to identify this benefits because they can’t be given a price, such as air, water purification, the making of oxygen and climate regulation. Having all this under control will generate a healthy biosphere in charge of: protect us against floods, generate healthful fertile soils, detoxify and discompose wastes and regulate climates.
Every day the presence of plants and organisms its more useful, as scientists say biodiversity inspires curiosity to them, in the scientific value it is important to preserve biodiversity, so the scientists can continue studying it, and discovering ways of saving it, the more they understand it, the greater uses we find for it.
For humans it is important to see there is beauty in the environment we live, because as a law of life, all kind of beauty always attracts humans. Otherwhise if we saw earth as a desolated landscape we wouldn’t care to improve it or take care of it. As an example of this are the mountains, are poor in diversity of species and habitants.

As humans are the only beings that can reason, we are the ones in charge of controlling or maintain biodiversity but as matter or fact, sadly human population is the major fact affecting the environment, if we study all the problems we are facing today, we would notice that they were caused because the increase of population. Every time we can notice changes in our way of life, for example the pollution of water with oil, acid rain, extinction of animal, diseases, deterioration of environments, among many others. But few people is trying to stop this. But not everything its bad there are also campaigns to maintain biodiversity, the problem here is the lack of consciousness.

We can see that México’s economy has been impacted, in real cases we are living. For example what just happen in Veracruz, we can be sure that flood was caused because of the loss of biodiversity and increasement of global warming causing flash foods from rainfall. In this case obviously México’s economy diseased very much because of the need of helping all the damaged people that were left homeless, they had to waste money in food, clothes, personal products, materials to build houses, etc. in other hand Mexico’s economy has also been affected in the way that the government is, planting trees, finding medical treatment for diseases, etc.

Finally. My proposes to make Yucatan a better and solitary place to increase biodiversity, are:
·         As Yucatán has a lot of vegetation and jungle, and everyday more people come to live in Yucatan, it think it would be good idea if the government bought part of this jungle and do not sell it to build houses never , also the lands sold should be a bit smaller.
·         Also Yucatán its very reach in species of animals, I would like to purpose the government to not ever make legal the hunting of this species.

As a conclusion the loss of biodiversity it’s a major problem now a days and we are making it minor, all the people should be aware of what will happen in a future, we should start caring for biodiversity as many people care about money.

PBL 1. Sickle Cells disease. A study case.                                           http://www.biculturalscience.blogspot.com/

Sickle Cell anemia is a disease caused by a gene mutation in red blood cells; it is common in England and in the Caribbean. The hemoglobin molecule is affected because it clumps together in solid structures and the red blood cells become disorted in their shape, so they die prematurely. These deformed cells can clog up in blood vessels, blocking the oxygen leading to sickle cell crisis and generating pain. There are many other complications that can be caused by this, like depression, stroke, vision problems etc.  The treatment for this disease involves bone marrow transplant and this disease can also prevent Malaria because the parasites are killed.
Malaria is a disease caused by a tiny parasite carried by mosquitoes, destroying red blood cells, it is common in West Africa, however the disease is not fatal, but it depends on the resistance of the genes. These two diseases are related because if you get one copy of the sickle cell anemia disease you can be protected of Malaria, however if you get two copies it can be dangerous.

Studying this disease we cover many objectives of Biology, such as, the study of life, cells, human body, and how our organism is affected by some diseases. The sciences used for the study of this diseases, include Biology, cytology, hematology, Anatomy, and medicine. Branches of Biology used to cover the study of this disease; are, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Histology and genetics. Cell, tissue, organ, system, organism, population, are the level or organization of matter that are being affected. Cells are affected because red blood cells are being disorted by their shape in this disease, tissues are being affected because of the clumping of red blood cells, forming solid structures; organs like The liver, heart, kidneys, gallbladder, eyes, bones, and joints can suffer damage from the abnormal function of the sickle cells. System is also covered by this disease because systems of the human body such as the Nervous System, Circulatory System are affected during the disease. The whole organism is involved and affected in this disease because all the damage that is caused by the Cell Anemia Disease in the human body. Like shown on the video, a entire population can be affected by these kind of diseases, such as the population in England or Africa.

Nucleic Acids are macromolecules involved in this disease because according to the copy of genes carried in the DNA, a person can or cannot have this disease, so Nucleic Acid carry the gene information that is needed to know the condition of the human being. Proteins also are involved, and this is because hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells are affected during the Cell anemia disease.
The function of hemoglobin as a protein is to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in red blood cells (oxygenation and deoxygenation). Hemoglobins have four levels of structure; primary, secondary, tertiary and fourth level and the levels affected by the disease are; primary, secondary and tertiary.
The consequences of these changes during the affection in the protein levels consist in the mutation of the human genes, in this case the hemoglobin and due to this, red blood cells malformed causing the Sickle Cell Anemia. There are no prevention methods for this disease, because it is transited genetically, but families with affected genes, should consider not having babies, to avoid transmitting this painful disease, however  the treatment consists in the donation of a bone marrow transplant, this could be a dangerous process for the donator, and would implicate serious thinking.

Sickle Cell Anemia is caused by the genetic mutation that affects the development of hemoglobin. This serious disease transmitted genetically is affecting many countries worldwide, is very important for the government of these countries to help families that need help for the treatment and care of this disease.
